My favourite newspaper racing column
"Today's best bets, by Ron Cox
Two horses who have been in good form over hurdles catch the eye on their return to the Flat today. At Haydock, Moonwalking (8.10) can step up on his fifth in an apprentices' handicap at Doncaster in March. Since then he has won twice over hurdles, and the step up to 1m6f should be in his favour.
Toshi (5.05) ran poorly in that same Doncaster race, but has done well over jumps since then, moving up to a rating of 125. From a mark of 57, Jim Goldie's gelding should be competitive in the nine-furlong handicap at Hamilton.
At Goodwood, Flapper (3.35) could be well treated on her handicap debut. She shaped nicely when fourth in a race over the course and distance that is working out well and Ryan Moore is booked"

Bethell's Max powers to success (From The Northern Echo)
One for the notebook. . .
Bethells Max powers to success (From The Northern Echo):
"JAMES BETHELL is set to scour the programme book for another imminent opportunity for Templetuohy Max after he recorded a decisive success in the Weatherbys Bloodstock Insurance Handicap at Redcar.
The visored runner was soon at the head of affairs under Graham Gibbons and while many of his rivals were hard at work after turning for home, his jockey sat motionless until approaching the two-furlong marker.
Once given a reminder, the 7-1 shot stretched even further clear – and was even able to ease down in the closing stages to come home four lengths clear of Spirit Of France.
Bethell said: ‘‘Last time at Nottingham we gave the instructions to Darryll (Holland) not to be frightened, so he went and made the running and just got caught.
‘‘So we said to Graham to do the same, and it is always quite difficult to make that ground up on this fast ground. He just went on and on.
‘‘I’ll have to go home and see what there is for him, but I think he ought to come out under a penalty as you just wouldn’t know what the handicapper will do.’’ Gibbons had earlier produced another fine frontrunning ride on El Dececy, who made the most of a drop in class to land the Racing UK Sky 432 Selling Stakes"

Diamond to sparkle at Redcar
Nightmare day yesterday with a rare blank for all tips topped off with broadband connection problems.....today has to be better
Diamond can really sparkle at Redcar (From The Northern Echo):
"REAL DIAMOND can make the best possible start to the year as she turns out in the Anderson Barrowcliff Handicap at Redcar.
Allan Dickman’s charge is making a relatively late seasonal bow, but she was on the go until the end of October so a lengthy break should have freshened her up nicely.
Real Diamond did not look a likely winner in her first three starts as a juvenile but she some improvement for experience at the back end of 2008 and eventually opened her account at the sixth time of asking.
Dickman largely campaigned in maidens last term with a sole start in nursery company and she returns to the handicap field here.
Racing off a mark of 66, she does not look too harshly treated and can do herself justice.
Mark Johnston’s Maqaam hails from a family of winners and he can continue the trend in the Buy Your Tickets On- Line redcarracing.co.uk Maiden Stakes.
A half-brother to the likes of Group Three-placed Nufoos among others, Maqaam has obviously taken some time to mature as he failed to start as a juvenile but connections’ patience can pay off."

Candy issues Amour Temple warning - Horse Racing - AOL Sport
Candy issues Amour Temple warning - Horse Racing - AOL Sport:
"Exciting young sprinter Amour Propre is among 12 final declarations for the betfred.com Temple Stakes at Haydock on Saturday.
However, trainer Henry Candy warns he will not run the three-year-old in the Group Two contest if the ground is soft.
He said: 'It's not ideal, but I think we shall to have a look and see what happens over the next couple of days. It will have to be a last-minute decision. He's very well - he's not done much since Newmarket - and he keeps himself fit.'"

Copper returns with high hopes (From The Northern Echo)
Copper returns with high hopes (From The Northern Echo):
"GODOLPHIN will be hoping Copperbeech can buck the statistics and go on to Investec Oaks glory after she has bagged the Height Of Fashion Stakes at Goodwood.
Formerly known as the Lupe Stakes, this ten-furlong heat was claimed by Love Divine nine years ago before she went on to Epsom glory but recent winners have largely failed to hit those kind of heights. However, Copperbeech brings Group One form to the table this time and she will surely take some beating if on song.
The Red Ransom filly won two of three starts for Andre Fabre last term, landing moderate events at Deauville and Longchamp before being stepped up in grade at the Arc meeting.
Her third behind Proportional in the Marcel Boussac was highly creditable, especially given that the runnerup Elusive Wave has subsequently bagged the French 1000 Guineas.
She was only beaten threequarters of a length by that runner despite already appearing in need of a longer trip, something that is sure to suit here."

Goodwood Chock A Block with success (From The Northern Echo)
Goodwood Chock A Block with success (From The Northern Echo):
"GODOLPHIN have seen a major turnaround in their fortunes over the last week, and Sheikh Mohammed’s operation can continue rejuvenating in the Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood.
This Listed event closes a busy fortnight of Derby trials, although it is not noted as producing Epsom candidates any more.
Godolphin have won it three times before, including Dubai Millennium in 1999.
This year’s candidate Chock A Block already has an entry in the Derby – although Aidan O’Brien is not likely to be watching with trepidation.
Chock A Block was trained by Robert Collet in France last season, winning his only start at Longchamp by four lengths, and the son of Dalakhani has a pedigree packed full of stamina.
An agonising second in the Lockinge, an Italian Derby success, and a good Dante meeting has propelled Godolphin’s popular trainer Saeed bin Suroor back in the spotlight.
Even with Derby aspirant Free Agent lurking in the field, Chock A Block still gets the nod.
William Knight is very familiar with the rolling Goodwood course – he is based just down the road at Littlehampton – and can get on the scoresheet with December Draw in the Racing UK Handicap.
This gelding was third in a good maiden at Great Leighs during the winter before winning at Lingfield without fuss. He looked to be in need of the run on his recent return at Windsor, still doing well enough to be third behind a Sir Michael Stoute steamer, and Knight should have more of a handle on him now."

Queen's Derby hopeful facing moment of truth at Goodwood - Times Online
Queen's Derby hopeful facing moment of truth at Goodwood Julian Muscat - Times Online:
"The unbeaten Free Agent returns from injury on Wednesday afternoon and will need to impress if he is to line up at Epsom next month
The Queen has what John Warren, her racing manager, describes as “a last-ditch opportunity” to be represented in the Derby when her Free Agent reappears today in the Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood. The unbeaten colt, trained by Richard Hannon, faces five opponents in the final trial for the blue riband on June 6.
Expectation is tempered by the fact that Free Agent is returning from an injury that curtailed his two-year-old campaign. The home-bred son of Dr Fong has been sidelined since winning Royal Ascot's Chesham Stakes last June. A bone flake was removed from his hind leg in September, since when the colt has been playing catch-up.
Free Agent was due to run at Chester until a foot abscess intervened, and connections were subsequently unwilling to throw him in at the deep end in York's Dante Stakes last week. However, it is now or never as far as Epsom is concerned, and Warren indicated that Free Agent must impress if he is to contest the Derby.
“This is a fact-finding mission,” he said, “but the Queen would want him to win convincingly to go to Epsom. Much though everyone would like her to have a runner, there would be no point in running for tail-end prize money.” Although Hannon is characteristically optimistic, Free Agent is expected to improve for his first outing in 11 months.

Tuesday Winning tips
A good day for the email lay & back selections, the email read:
"Good afternoon,
Three best bets, and I am going to oppose two today:
Beaten fav lto Military Call, is popular in the first at Musselburgh but I am more interested in Regniere backed in to 4/1, when the money comes for a KR Burke it pays to take heed more often than not. Regniere WON 5/1
I am going to be brave (hopefully not foolish) and oppose the Pricewise extra pick Annabelles Charm 10/3 7.40 Leicester with Snowed Under 7/1 for inform J Bethall, this course specialist looks hard to beat in my book.
That leaves Zamora as a plain win selection."

Propre heads Temple hopes -
Propre heads Temple hopes - Horse Racing - AOL Sport:
"Fast-improving sprinter Amour Propre heads the field for Saturday's betfred.com Temple Stakes at Haydock in the expected absence of Overdose.
Hungarian star Overdose was pencilled in for his first British start in the Group Two event but has been having foot problems, which have interrupted his training.
Henry Candy compared Amour Propre favourably to his other fine sprinters over the years after the three-year-old quickened away with the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket. He has 16 rivals still in contention at the five-day stage."

Chevalier looking to Ascot (From The Northern Echo)
Chevalier looking to Ascot (From The Northern Echo):
"MONSIEUR Chevalier can book his ticket for Royal Ascot on what could be another good night for trainer Richard Hannon in the Weatherbys Bank Conditions Stakes at Windsor.
The Wiltshire handler is renowned for his legions of classy juveniles and this colt appears to be another out of the top drawer judged on his two wins to date. An easy fivelength scorer on his racecourse bow at Folkestone, Monsieur Chevalier took another step up the ladder with a further bloodless success at Newmarket last time.
Making a leap to conditions company, he hit the front over a furlong out and Richard Hughes did not have to get too serious to come home three and a half lengths clear.
Hannon rates him as possible Ascot material and although he has to concede weight, Monsieur Chevalier can bag this prize on the way to next month’s meeting."

Sweet success for Apple - Cecil scores for me
Sweet success for Apple - Horse Racing - AOL Sport:
"Apple Charlotte emerged as yet another top-class contender for Henry Cecil with a gutsy success in the Swettenham Stud Fillies' Trial Stakes at Newbury.
Cecil already has a live Oaks hope in Midday and this daughter of Royal Applause looks similarly smart after triumphing as 13-8 favourite in the 10-furlong heat. Uvinza set out to make all, with Tom Queally happy to sit on her heels aboard Apple Charlotte before kicking to the front over two furlongs out.
The easy ground proved more of a test for Cecil's filly, though, and The Miniver Rose made a good battle of it inside the final half-furlong. However, Apple Charlotte responded for pressure to pull two and a quarter lengths clear at the line.
Cecil said: 'She could have settled a bit better, but they didn't go very quick early on and the further she went, the better. She's in the Coronation Stakes and has won twice over a mile. She's not in the Ribblesdale at the moment and we really need to have a think about things.'"

York Races this week!
The Press Association: York geared towards 'great week': "York geared towards 'great week'
York clerk of the course William Derby is excited about the prospect of quality racing returning to the Knavesmire this week.
The Yorkshire track lost its showpiece Ebor meeting in August due to waterlogging, and extensive work has since taken place on the racing surface. A new drainage system has been installed at the course, which drew high praise from local trainer Richard Fahey after he took a team of horses for a trial gallop recently.
'We're really looking forward to it. We've just changed the ground to good to firm, good in places, and there is a lot of activity on site at the minute, as you can imagine. We're all set for a great week,' said Derby.
'We're keen to get going with our season and we are very excited by the standard of entries, especially the Dante on Thursday - we hope that is a great race and some good stories come out of it."

Chester Jackpot Race Meeting Friday
This Chester meeting has been a total nightmare so far! It has totally ruined my strike rate, so I hope to turn it all back around today. . .
This result enraged me (and many others probably) with O'Brien running two which came 1st and 2nd
2:45
1 Golden Sword 25-1
2 Masterofthehorse 13-8 Fav
3 Debussy 11-4
So the betting got it totally wrong, but remember O'Brien has been in trouble for winning with so called pace-makers before..
"Murtagh (Masterofthehorse 2nd) was asked to explain his ride to the stewards, who took no action and added: "I rode him as I was told. In two of his races last year he was ridden handy and didn't finish his races. Aidan said to drop him in today, let him relax and finish his race."
Hmmmmm
The race report reads "Any thoughts thatGOLDEN SWORD was here to act as a pacemaker for Masterofthehorse were partly confirmed when the former was sent straight into the lead and set a decent pace, but not many would have still expected him to still be in front at the line. As soon as his rider asked him to stretch away from his nearest rivals passing the 3f pole, it became obvious that it would have taken something special to catch him and that never looked like happening. He had run well to finish fourth in a French Group 2 on his seasonal reappearance last month, and this step up to 1m4f proved to be no problem at all. It also showed that he doesn´t need soft ground and it´s probably worth taking a positive view of this form, but he is still a top-priced 40-1 for the Derby with Ladbrokes.
