Happy New Year

Just Lingfield left today - can I hit the jackpot again to end the year on a high?

Free Horse Racing Tips Monday Jackpot:

Tough, tough day yesterday - is it the new improved (not) Racing Post stats? Hmmmm

"Newbury Jackpot Placepot Tips - Stop at a Winner Dutch Betting

12.30 Sir Jimmy Shand

1.35 Gone To Lunch won 11/8 Money Trix

Taunton held an early inspection but have to re-inspect at 10am so I will be very wary about picking any bets there. Thankfully the jackpot is at Lingfield so the predicted big freeze should not have too much of a detrimental effect there

Free horse racing tips Saturday Results

Tough day at the main meeting meeting yesterday but two winners at 4/1 and 5/1 saved the day.

"Kempton Jackpot Placepot & SAW Bets

1.05 Classic Swain
1.40 Deep Purple
2.15 Seymar Lad, The King Of Angels
2.45 Aimigayle won 4/1, Hora 2nd 4/1
3.15 Takeroc
3.45 Pascha Bere, Ingratitude won 5/1"

Neither the jackpot nor the scoop6 were won underlining just how tricky a Saturday it was!

Later on I put my selections for the evening all weather meting up on the forum and despite severe seconditus found a very welcome 14/1 winner. The Barney Curley owned Northern Dune was forecast to go off at about 5/1 but drifted severeley but won in great style - the received wisdom is usually to follow his horses when the money is down but this winner shows the value is sometimes ( often I reckon) lies in going against the crowd.

Better crack on amd mark up todays Jackpot: £58,376.24 carried forward to Catterick! That would dispel the New Year blues nicely.

Scoop6 not won!

Second fav in the last leg, Petit Robin 2/1 was denied in athrilling finish by German raider Fiepes Shuffle at 16-1 for C Von Der Recke so mega rolover next week.

Full results to follow. . .but I have to ask...What on earth are they playing at with the TV coverage of the scoop6?

Originally billed as the big Saturday televised races bet, today the first race was not on TV and the rest are split between BBC1 ad Channel4 - a nightmare to follow. Another move that is not in the interests of the average punter. What do you think?

Given the huge bonus pool I expect there to be a big win fund to be played for today, with most of the races having 12 or 13 runners and the 2.45 21 runners there is no way the syndicates can cover the field in any of them so all us small stakes punters stand a chance at better odds than the lottery!

A bad dose of seconditus yesterday, any sensible punter knows losing days are inevitable, so off to look back at yesterday's results and try to learn from them for today's racing.

Another lay and back for email subscribers yesterday, I wrote " I am going to oppose the third, King Caine,a McCoy favourite and as such is probably priced shorter than its true odds. My selection is Suntini also now 9/2 JF as it has already been backed and distance and conditions should suit Suntini better than King Caine who has question marks against stamina and going."

The result? Suntini wins at 5-1, King Caine unplaced. Annoyingly I missed proofing these bets as racing was delayed slightly and Racing Index goes by the published race time not the real time.

Despite the desperate weather in parts of the country 3 race meetings, included the jackpot card at Leicester, went ahead. Managed to find a few good winners to keep the stop ata winner staking going well.

"Leicester Jackpot Placepot tips & stop at a winner bets

1.10 Mvuto, Janets Delight
1.40 Monsieur Georges won 7/1, Vehari 3rd 9/1
2.10 Pacco 3rd
2.40 Latanier won 5/4
3.10 Mutual Respect 3rd 4/1, Kilkenny All Star
3.40 Caulkleys Bank"

The Jackpot was not won so there is a small rollover of £9,280.84 carried forward to Sandown. The card looks nasty, especially if you like a few lines on the placepot to protect your betting bank. There are 2 5 runner races & one with 7, assuming no non runners so only the win and one place to shoot for in those races. No less than FUR of the races are novices so is it to be a top weight day or an anything could win day? Hmm, off to mark up the card and make my decisions.

Racing Post

The launch of the new site today looks to be a total debacle. The site will not load most of the time and when it eventually does ( only twice since 10am!) the login for the new features just locks the page and simialr happens if you try to access the cards.

Someone will be getting a rollicking I hope.

The reason for the update? To introduce more paid for services. Will anyone pay after this abysmal start? Not me for one - vote for or against on Gh Racing Forum

Hereford on

Teletext.co.uk Sport headlines: "Hereford good to go
This afternoon's meeting at Hereford will go ahead as scheduled after a mild night at the track.

A 7.30am precautionary inspection had been called but clerk of the course Katie Stephens and her team found there was no need to check as forecast temperatures failed to materialise.

Stephens said: 'The going is good to soft, good in places , and there is no frost in the ground at all.'"

Tuesday snow woes

H"EREFORD Precautionary INSPECTION 7.30am Tuesday due to forecast frost." That was the statement published last night but today's weather reports show widespread Icy Roads & heavy snow forecast to spread southeastwards overnight, and these are likely to be briefly heavy so the odds of Hereford racing going ahead look slim. Plus I an always wary of betting at meetings where morning inspections are held as the weather and going combine to make them dodgy betting propositions.

Two all weather meetings then today and there is a Jackpot pool of £33,151.59 carried forward to Lingfield. Extra early start with the first race at 12.30 Lingfield and 11.50 at Southwell so I had better get my ice skates on and mark up the cards.

Just a couple of winners yesterday but as the first Top rated: Doctored won 3/1 at 12.30 Folkstone the stop at a winner staking came up trumps agin!

Sunday Free Horse Racing Tips Results

Poor racing at the moment but as I often say every race has to have a winner
- you may score brownie points or extra kudos for finding winners in group races etc but a winner is a winner when your hard earned £££'s are down and the class or quality of race matters not a jot in terms of profit.

Stop at a winner proofing continues to perform well with proofed bets ending up 22.43 points in profit BSP Profit On Turnover 29.51% at level stakes and 5% betfair commission, at advised stakes 50.93 points profit.
So little and often tots up nicely over a month!

With Carlisle abandoned runners for my favourite Northern trainers are very thin on the ground, in fact there is just one "Toss The Caber 7/2 13:50 Leicester". Luckily Reveley has a great 29% strike rate here in hurdles, and dropped to a seller Toss looks a value bet at 7/2.

NB today's winners will not be eligible to go for the bonus pool next week so any winners of the main scoop6 next week will have a pop at it in time for Xmas

news - www.racingpost.co.uk: "Lee Mottershead reports:

THE chance to be made a millionaire - and perhaps a double millionaire - will be presented by the Scoop6 next Saturday after the collective brains chasing a £1.5 million pot of gold failed on Saturday to do so despite having more than half the Hennessy Gold Cup running for them.

Professional punter Harry Findlay, who held two of the eight triumphant tickets from a week ago, and the six remaining win fund victors collaborated in a bid to boost their prospects of finding the winner of the Hennessy, the race selected by the Tote as the gateway to the £1,529,525.

However, the newly formed Scoop6 'syndicate' failed to find 25-1 shot Madison Du Berlais and, as a result, around £2m will be up for grabs the next time the bonus fund can be played for on Saturday week."

So the syndicates will be hurting big style, if they continue to chase their losses next week their should be a healthy win fund and of course the bonus pool the next week.

Have been trying to find next Saturdays Channel 4 Racing schedule, no joy but will post the meetings and/or races for next weeks scoop6 asap

Sunday Free Horse Racing Tips Results

A tough days racing at Aintree yesterday with just the one winner at "2.15 Serabad won at 9/2"

Going back to the scoop6, the media seem dead keen for the one £2 punter to come forward for publicity purposes. From the reports I guess the other 7 winning tickets belonged to syndicates, high stakes players which they would rather not publicise to keep joe public having his £2 entries.

Racing post report "THE mysterious punter who on Saturday won £437,011 on the Scoop6 after staking just £2 has been revealed to be a married man living in Newbury, but nothing else is set to be revealed about him unless he abandons his desire for anonymity.

Attempts by the Tote and Stan James - in whose Thatcham shop the winningbet was placed - to locate the punter today resulted in him making himself known to the bookmakers. However, he has yet to agree to reveal himself to the wider world.

Stan James spokeswoman Laura Stephens said: "The winning Scoop6 punter lives in Newbury and is a married man. At this stage that's all we know as he ticked the anonymous box, but we hope he will change his mind about anonymity later in the week and agree to publicity."

The £2 punter held one of the eight winning tickets, the owners ofwhich will all get the chance on Saturday to win a share of the £1,529,525 in the bonus fund. "

news - scoop6 winners

news - www.racingpost.co.uk: "EIGHT winning tickets won Saturday's Scoop6 pool, each taking home £437,011.39.

Going into the last leg - the 3.50 at Lingfield - 37 tickets remained, with only three of the runners not covered.

Duff, trained in Ireland by Edward Lynam, ran away with the final race, much to the delight of the eight ticket-holders.

One of the lucky winners was Racing UK presenter Peter Naughton, who was working for the racing channel as Duff recorded his victory.

'My hands are shaking. There are a fair few of us who have put £50 in each for the last few weeks, so we thought we would have another crack this time. I would say there is around 60 or so in the group,' said Naughton.

Another winner is reported to beHarry Findlay, who is believed to have had more than one winning ticket.

The pool reached £4,994,416 before the start of the first race, which was won by Atlantic Story, who got favourite backers off to a cracking start under Ryan Moore. The second leg went to Romany Princess - also ridden by Moore.

The 2.45 at Haydock looked tricky on paper with the majority of punters going for Osako D'Airy. However, he could only manage fourth as Possol lifted the prize.

Punters placed their faith in the Pricewise selection Bronze Cannon in the fourth leg, with John Gosden's inmate carrying 986 tickets, however, Yahrab lifted that contest under Jamie Spencer."

news - www.racingpost.co.uk:

"THE Tote have selected four all-weather Flat races at Lingfield plus one event from each of the jumps cards at Haydock and Huntingdon for Saturday's record-breaking Scoop6.

The 2.10, 2.40, 3.20 and 3.50 events from Lingfield will be joined by Haydock's 3m handicap chase at 2.45 and Huntingdon's 3.30 contest - which becomes the 3m2f handicap hurdle previously due off at 2.55 - for the bet, which has rolled over for the past 11 weeks.

The six races contain a total of 77 runners."

Scoop6 news

Bring it on!

At The Races - Lingfield key to Scoop6:
"Odds compilers at the Tote have been studying the crucial races on the Flat card following the 48-hour declarations.

'Provisionally there were four possible races in contention at Lingfield. The 2.10, the 2.40, the 3.20 and the 3.50. The 3.20 was not originally down to be shown on Channel 4, but our odds compilers looked at it and said it's a very competitive race,' said totesport spokesman Damian Walker.
'It's likely that race will be included now in the Scoop6 and if it is Channel 4 will show it. The 2.10 also looks very competitive.

'The 2.10, the 2.40 and the 3.20 are all likely at this stage to be in the Scoop6 which would then leave us looking for another three races, possibly two at Huntingdon and the 2.45 at Haydock. We've also got the possibility of the 3.05 Amlin Chase at Ascot. It's taking shape now, but the final decision will be made as soon as we can after the overnight declarations.

'Punters who want to get an early start by looking at the form should probably concentrate on the 2.10, the 2.40 and the 3.20 races at Lingfield which look likely races in the Scoop6 at this stage.'

After the bet was not won for the 10th week running the win fund now stands at £2,037,527 while there is £904,426 in the bonus fund."

Scoop6 news

news - www.racingpost.co.uk: "THE TOTE are reeling from an 'amazing' gamble on Thursday morning on how much willbe bet on the Scoop6 on Saturday.

Punters latched onto their 50-1 that over £4 million will be added to the near £3m rollover funds and by first-race time on Thursday the price was down to 5-2, with stakes limited as the Tote struggled to tot up the liabilities.

'It has been incredible,' said Tote spokesman Damian Walker. 'Any price we go is being taken and our odds compilers have never seen anything like it. This is the biggest specials market we have ever taken.'
The 50-1 was initially cut to 14-1 but with punters still eager to get on, the price has gone through 10-1, 8-1 and 5-1 to reach 5-2.

As a consequence, the 13-8 favourite that £2-£2.5m will be added on Saturday is out to 5-1. It's 100-1 under £1.5m, 9-2 over £2.5m-£3m and £3.5-£4m is in to 5-2 from 14-1."

The Press Association: Sunny scoops prize to deny punters: "The totescoop6 rolls over for a 10th time after Sunnyhillboy sprung a 14-1 surprise in the closing Racing UK Novices' Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham.

A total of 19 tickets were remaining before the extended two-mile heat, but Dominic Elsworth scuppered their chances with a perfectly-judged ride aboard Jonjo O'Neill's charge.

Sunnyhillboy was level with outsider Maneki Neko at the last and although he made hard work of it on the run-in, Elsworth's mount held on to ensure a record fund in next week's Scoop6 bet.

'It was a funny old race - they didn't go a great gallop. It's nice to ride winners at big meetings,' said Elsworth.

With over £2million in the win fund and a further £904,426 in the bonus pool, a record combined pot was on offer. But that amount is set to be dwarfed by next week's potential combined prize of up to £5million and the Tote are anticipating another bumper day of business."

Next Saturday's racing on Channel 4 is scheduled to be from:
Ascot 3:05

Scoop6 Races 15th Nov Rollover

Four races from Cheltenham and two races from Wetherby make up the six scoop6 races that could win one lucky punter at least £1.3m or it could be shared amongst the members of some of the big syndicates.

Scoop6 Races

Race One – 2.00 Cheltenham

Race Two – 2.35 Cheltenham

Race Three – 2.55 Wetherby

Race Four – 3.10 Cheltenham

Race Five – 3.25 Wetherby

Race Six – 3.45 Cheltenham

Hopefully there will be some pointers from today's racing at Cheltenham.

Scoop6 news

Horse racing: Big hitters line up huge stakes for Tote's Scoop6 tilts | Sport | The Guardian: "The last four races from the major meeting at Cheltenham and two more at Wetherby are expected to make up the challenge facing punters playing the Tote's Scoop6 tomorrow, when the dividend for a single winning £2 ticket could exceed £2m. All six races are due to be fiercely competitive handicaps, including the 20-runner Paddy Power Gold Cup.. . .

with a record rollover of £1,303,036 in tomorrow's pool, the result of 10 consecutive weeks without an outright winner, there is real optimism at the Tote that someone will win a life-changing, headline-grabbing sum of money.

To date, the biggest Scoop6 payout for to an individual, small-staking punter is £878,939, received by Ron Nicholson in April 2004 for a stake of just £4. The record for a small-stakes punter who also won the bonus fund the following week is £688,620, paid to Agnes Haddock, who had a single £2 line in the original pool, in February 2007

Harry Findlay, probably Britain's most famous full-time punter, and Richard "Scoop6 Squirrel" Brocklebank, both of whom are multiple winners of the bet, were both starting to plan their latest assaults on the pool yesterday.

"I'm going to have a massive go," Findlay said, "and it's a big relief for me that it's jumping, after the horror of the Flat races over the last few weeks. It's a very important play for me on Saturday. I've got a runner at Cheltenham, but I won't be there. I'll be at home, working on the Scoop6.

"I've got people like Glenn [Gill] who work on the form, then for me it's all about working out the perms and deciding exactly how much to have on to get the most value.

"But for me, there's no other rollover bet in the world to compete with the Scoop6 and I've got no doubt that, whether you have £2 in there on Saturday or a £40,000 perm, you're going to be getting value. The only real advantage for a big syndicate like ours is that you're much more likely to get some money back from the place fund

Brocklebank, who gained his nickname by dressing as a squirrel to meet up with other Scoop6 winners prior to a tilt at the bonus fund a few years ago, is also preparing a significant perm.

"I'd think we might put about 50,000 lines at £2 each, which is our biggest ever stake, but then this is the biggest ever rollover, so you have got to stake accordingly," Brocklebank said yesterday.

"Overall, I'd guess I've made a profit of about £1m on the Scoop6 now. I used to bet on all sorts of things, but I've found over the years that this bet and the Jackpot are the only ones I can make pay."

Saturday’s fare will now kick off with the Grade Two Ryman The Stationer Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle (12.50), while the finale is the Racing UK Novices’ Handicap Hurdle (3.45).

news - www.racingpost.co.uk:

"A BOGUS tipster from West Sussex has been prevented from carrying out any more scams after being hit with a High Court injunction following action taken by the OFT.

Denis McCarthy sent out a series of mailshots under the name of D&E Associates offering a racing tipster service which, at a cost of up to £397, promised the chance to win 'over £2,000 per week tax free'. It is believed that more than 4,000 people sent money in response to the letters, netting McCarthy an estimated £300,000.

The OFT considered the mailings to be misleading as they gave the impression that the supposed experts behind D&E Associates, Peter Deegan and Christopher Emmerson, were real people with over 60 years combined experience in the racing industry who had access to inside information.....

The High Court injunction prohibits McCarthy from continuing to be involved in the publication of misleading advertisements promoting tipster services. "

Jackpot rollover

Today's Jackpot sees £110,225.19 carried forward to Uttoxeter, worth 50p of anyone's money to pick one horse in each race to try and win the prize pool.

I usually pick two horses in at least three of the jackpot card races where I think the shorter priced horses may be turned over by a long shot. This decision is based on trends and trainer, jockey, course statistics plus hours of studyng the race cards which gives background information as the extra spice in the selection process.

My Uttoxeter tips will be online later or you can get them before the general public by signing up for my email tip alerts.

Breeders' Cup Update

There is a strong European presence at this years Breeders Cup meeting, but the reason may trainers are keen to attend is not he prize money or trophies but to raise the value of their stallions for stud later...

Breeders' Cup is not all about money - Telegraph: "This year's Santa Anita meeting has been extended, for the first time, to 14 races over two days and, worth $26.5m, it purports to be the most valuable two days of sport ever, a boast I'm not going to argue with.

But while the big money is the main draw for many Europeans, a few million bucks here and there, is not life-changing for either of Europe's two superpowers, Coolmore's John Magnier and Sheikh Mohammed. For them the Breeders' Cup is what it says on the tin, much more about showcasing potential stallions. That's the thinking behind Duke of Marmalade, Henrythenavigator and Raven's Pass all running in the Classic instead of on turf"

For a great preview ( and tipping competition) check out At The Races Breeders Cup Site: "Breeders' Cup Preview! Introduced by Tony Ennis with special guest Matt Chapman, this nine-part programme looks at all the races at the 2008 Breeders' Cup meeting with detailed analysis and video form."

TheHendonMob.com ::- BoylePoker.com International Poker Open October '08 - Dublin

The Hendon Mob have put up the full finishing list of all the players who made it into the money at the BoylePoker.com International Poker Open October '08 - Dublin TheHendonMob.com :: View topic - BoylePoker.com International Poker Open October '08 - Dublin: ",300 Players started....Here's how it finished....(Over €30k in added money to bring the prize-pool up to €205,600). 1 Ruairi Coy €37,530 2 Maxence Decorne €23,130 3 Elie Payan €17,000"

They also mention there will be a similar event on the 27th December in Dublin, maybe even the same venue though only limited to 500 players for 200+20, 100k event watch this space for tourney called XLZ Z = ZOO

Scott Grey whom I played next to for a while also gets a mention, thanks again Scott for the tip on how to et a full pot of coffee, no carboard carton for him, class! "Congrats to Scott Grey for folding his way into 27th place his starting list of playable hands are very lmited see list below; AA KK QQ in late position to an unraised pot JJ but only on sb or BB to an unraised pot AK suited on SB or BB to an unraised pot thats it, no gambling from our Scott oh yeah i almost forgot sometimes he is known as Scott "2 moves" Grey as in, move no.1 (and his most popular) = FOLD move no.2 = ALL IN all that in between play is for the birds this is a tried and tested system, he made the world series final table once using the same system, so why change now in cash games, his byword is "rake? what rake? oh yeah, rake is for other people" still he is up there as poker pro's go, highly respected and super slick "

2008 October 19 | Dublin IPO Update

2008 October 19 | Boylepokerblog.com (8): "Raiser Razed - 14:49
October 19th, 2008 | Category: Grand Final, IPO

Ian ‘the raiser’ Frazer just surrendered his bounty over on table 53, having just snuck into the money. Previously he’d seriously damaged his stack by doubling up neighbour Jacob Van Wijk with Q-J suited vs A-7 - I think most of the money went in after the J-8-A flop and there was no improvement for Frazer. But he’d really managed to sneak a microstack into 127th place: the hand before he busted, he put just 16,000 in the middle after Jennie Holland (also short) had shoved all-in preflop under the gun.
She turned out to have As 6s, while his Jc Js were plenty good to win a stack of 43,000. That went in the next hand, and this time Jean Louis Gloaguen was thinking about making the call. Checking out his slightly less desperate stack, Frazer offered: “43. And a football shirt.” He made the call - now Frazer said, “I only have Ace high…I hope you have a pair of Nines.” No such luck - he was dominated with Ah 10h vs Ac Js. The board came 7-K-2-A-5 and Frazer hit the felt."

The "IF"

Sure it’s just a slogan for Boylepoker but at poker tournaments like the IPO it’s all about the IF.

It also happens to be the name of the poem by Rudyard Kipling and one of the if’s is:

“If you can make 1 heap of all your winnings, And risk it on 1 turn of pitch and toss, And lose and start again at your beginnings, And never breath a word about your loss….. then yours is the earth and everything that’s in it and, which is more, you’ll be a man, my son.”

I don’t think he was a poker player, because the bar at this years IPO is full of bad beat stories; they just can’t keep it to themselves.

Big Brown's racing career through after injury

SignOnSanDiego.com > Sports -- Big Brown's racing career through after injury: "The dream matchup between Big Brown and Curlin in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Oct. 25 at Santa Anita, which appeared promising as late as yesterday morning, is not to be....during a workout Big Brown had “grabbed a quarter” – meaning he made contact with his right hind hoof to an area in his rear lower right front hoof and leg – and gashed away 3-4 inches of flesh and hoof.

The injury is not considered life threatening, given the prevention of infection, and measures were being taken in that regard. But it will require several weeks to heal.

“It's not a devastating injury to a racehorse in the long term. It is for one that has a race in 12 days,” Iavarone said. “It was a tremendous blow to the gut of all of us. . . . My heart goes out to all the fans who wanted to see a Big Brown-Curlin match-up in the Breeders' Cup Classic. It would have been a great one.”

In May, a reported $50 million agreement was reached for Big Brown to stand stud next year at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky. Big Brown retires with a lifetime record of seven wins in eight starts and earnings of $3,614,500."

Horse Racing Stats

I did something very unlike me and signed up to a trial subscription to some racing stats

The offer was £1 for the first month then £37 a month. I received no log in or any downloads at all!! Plus, when the trial month was near the end I tried to follow their unsubscribe instructions but could not unsubscribe.

Angry and cursing myself for apparently being suckered in I emailed and asked that the uncancellable payment be returned to me. The response? A disengenious waffle saying they cannot unsubscribe me despite my stating that I had now unsubscribed and wanted my £37 back....

What response will I get to this, my latest email?

"The problem was that I could not unsubscribe before the £37 was taken. The instructions did not work.

I have now unsubscribed and you will have received notification of that fact and
I request a refund from you for the reason above, namely that your instructions to unsubscribe did not work in my case."

I received only one email about my subscription which referred to paypal problems I guess those were never resolved in my case.

I can now say that I have now received a refund.

My lesson learned, keep an eye on your paypal subscriptions and follow up sooner than I did if things don't seem right especially if you also have memory problems like me...

Really enjoying my break and spending time with my daughter

Johnston runs 4 today:

- William Blake (GB) 16:40 Kempton
- Chambers (IRE) 15:00 Windsor
- Red And White (IRE) 16:30 Windsor
- Always Certain (USA) 16:50 Wolverhampton

All 6/1 and above but he should have a least one winner, Always Certain looks the most likely on paper but he is more than capable of putting in 12 or 16/1 shots so stop at a winner as per usual

Breeders' Cup Updates

Dope testing: looks as if the testing for drugged horses has been stepped up for this years Breeders Cup. Breeders Cup entrants face testing: "Breeders' Cup series entrants will be tested randomly for blood-doping agents 10 days before the races, the California Horse Racing Board said.

Officials are looking for epoetin, darbepoetin and other blood-doping agents that are administered days or weeks before the competition, the board said. The drugs usually aren't detected in samples collected after races"

Perhaps the most important change are the new rules which state that trainers of horses that test positive for anabolic steroids at the Breeders' Cup will face a one-year suspension from the event, and three-time violators will be banned for life.

An announcment about the furutre of the Breeders Cup is expected later today. There has been much speculation as to where the race wil be held in the future with Churchill Downs the most likely venue for the 2010 Breeders’ Cup.

The 2008 and 2009 races will be held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. This year’s races are on Oct. 24 and 25.

The official Breeders Cup site is well worth a visit for all the statistics, news and updates.

At The Races - Speed Ratings - Tuesday:

The next big UK race is the totesport.com Cesarewitch Handicap, ATR speed ratings can help narrow down the field "Current top-rated horses for the totesport.com Cesarewitch Handicap (Newmarket, October 18): Bollin Felix 122, Akarem 116, La Vecchia Scuola 115, Always Bold 115, Hits Only Vic 113, Wingman 111."

Curlin Big Brown Showdown ?

Curlin Sets Earnings Mark; Showdown With Big Brown Could Be Next - NYTimes.com:

Will Curlin race aainst Big Brown or not? Mixed messages still...

"Curlin added another major achievement to his record Saturday, becoming the richest horse in North American history with his victory in the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup at a wet Belmont Park. With few other challenges left, he may now turn his attention to what could be the most difficult assignment of his career — a showdown with the Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown.
Curlin will be shipped to Santa Anita Park in California on Sunday morning, an indication that his next race could come in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, a race that is on Big Brown’s schedule.Curlin’s owner, Jess Jackson, would not commit to the Breeders’ Cup on Saturday"

The jackpot was not won yet again so £80,001.39 is carried forward to Ascot today.

It was a long hard day at the office as well, made worse by feeling rather unwell but I did finish with a flourish with Personify winning at 8/1 in the very last race of the day at Great Leighs.

9.20 Personify won 9/1

More tips to follow. . .

Breeders’ Cup Build up continues

A major topic amongst the racing media is the new surface at Santa Anita and the effect it may have:

Synthetic Track the Wildcard in Breeders’ Cup: "The 2008 Breeders’ Cup will be run at Santa Anita on October 24th and 25th over a new synthetic surface. The surface is a Pro-Ride surface that was installed over the summer and replaces the mess of a surface that Santa Anita had last year that wouldn’t drain and cost the track millions of dollars."

So far trainers seem to like the Pro-Ride surface better than Polytrack.

Result, Redcar Wednesday

Another poor day for me on the jackpot card at Redcarr races, so grateful to have made a profit on the placed Kellies Rocket at 14/1 but obviously I was not alone as the jackpot was not won again so £82,055.21 is carried forward to Great Leighs tonight. That would cover a heap of Xmas shopping. ( Wash my mouth out!)

I also put up a Johnston winner at Kempton in the evening on the forum.

At The Races - Trio fall foul of 'team tactics' rule

At The Races - Trio fall foul of team tactics rule: "Aidan O'Brien, Johnny Murtagh and Colm O'Donoghue have all been found guilty of breaching the rules of racing in relation to the Juddmonte International Stakes won by Duke Of Marmalade at Newmarket last month."

Wonder how this will affect tactics in the future especially regarding pacemakers and trainers making multiple entries in any one race. . .

Ramsdens in racing

Tattenham Corner:The Observer: "Ramsdens still racing on

Lynda Ramsden has retired from the training ranks, but she and husband Jack, long thought of as one of the smartest punters around, have far from severed their connections with racing. The Ramsdens have owned several horses in recent seasons with a variety of trainers including Alan Swinbank, Simon Callaghan and Ed Vaughan, often under the S P Racing Investments banner.

Many will be watching how matters develop in their link with the canny Michael Wigham, with whom they have three-year-old In Toto. The Ramsdens' son-in-law Jamie Spencer steered the Wigham-trained Ainama to land a gamble at Chester three weeks ago."

An interesting angle to pursue...

Big Brown Bandwagon rolls on

Big brown has a big reputation, attracts big crowds and acres of newsprint whenever he runs and his latest race at Monmouth was no different with over 17,000 fans turning out as reported by the Philadelphia Daily News:

"There was about a football field of racing left for Big Brown to negotiate Saturday at Monmouth Park when three horses, with the combination of 25 wins, 10 graded stakes and nearly $3 million in earnings, came at him from the inside and outside. The $500,000 Monmouth Stakes was not really the race the Big Brown people wanted to win. They were getting the Kentucky Derby winner ready for the Oct. 25 Breeders' Cup Classic.
Big Brown was trained with that race in mind. That will be the all-in contest."

However the Breeders Cup Oct. 24-25, 2008, Santa Anita, may not prove to be as easy to win for Big Brown, his trainer Dutrow reckons Big Brown is better on grass than dirt. So the first big question is how Big Brown will handle the new artificial surface at Santa Anita for the Breeders' Cup. the 2008 meeting at Santa Anita will be the first Breeders' Cup site to hold the main track races on a synthetic surface

The second question about Big Brown's ability to take this prestigious race, and possibly most crucial factor, is the sheer class of this years Breeders’ Cup contenders with some very strong European challengers. At the moment it looks as though 4 of the 6 top rated horses in the world - Duke Of Marmalade, Curlin, Big Brown and New Approach - may run, a classy field indeed!

If they do run, then the Breeders' Cup will truly be able to call itself "the world championship" of racing. But which continenent will win?
