The Key To Finding Winners Trained By Mark Johnston

The Key To Finding Winners Trained By Mark Johnston

Mark Johnston is one of the top flat racing trainers within the UK who has trained over 100 winners on the flat every year for the last decade, shrewd punters may have spotted patterns that help them latch onto some of his winners, I would like to share one such pattern that has provided me with my fair share of Mark Johnston trained winners in the past.

Whenever a trainer steps their horse up in trip on the flat, it usually means one of two things. Either the trainer is running them over an unsuitable trip to keep their horses handicap mark low whilst having an opportunity to give them some more racing experience, it can also mean that the trainer is still unsure about the horses optimum trip and is still trying to find out; if it's the latter reason, you can be pretty sure the horses are fit enough to do themselves justice, especially with a trainer like Mark Johnston who is someone that embraces new medicine and training techniques more than any other trainer I know of.

I've read on numerous occasions that Mark Johnstons' horses were always worth checking out when being stepped up in trip, finally I have had the time to do the required research, I'd like to share my findings with you, it makes for very interesting reading. I tried to make the search as broad as possible, so my research covers both the flat and all weather surfaces, it details the results of horses stepping up in trip based on the race distance they tried last time out only. Some horses may have been stepped up in trip in the past, the remainder will have done this for the first time. This was a conscious decision on my part so the reader had as many opportunities to apply this research in the future.

I decided to group the data in such a way that could easily identify any patterns, initially I tested for horses stepping up to a mile having raced over 5 furlongs or 6 furlongs or 7 furlongs, I then tested in the same manner for the most common race distances up to 1 mile 6 furlongs, so the test related to horses stepping up to 1 mile 6 furlongs involved breaking the data down into horse that raced over 6 or 7 or 8 or 9 or 10 or 11 or 12 or 13 furlongs last time out. By the time I was finished, I had spotted a clear pattern and it was pretty much what I was expecting to see.

It turns out that Marks Johnstons' horses are never more interesting than when they are stepping up in trip by more than one furlong; this makes sense to me as Mark would be more certain that the horse would benefit from a longer trip when they were being stepped up by more than a furlong. Horses being stepped up only a furlong were still interesting and in most cases they were showing a small profit, but it was clear that in nearly every case where the horse was being stepped up in trip by between 2 and 4 furlongs, his horses showed a very healthy profit.

Rather than combine all the research into one final figure, I've decided to publish small subsections of results that I believe make the most compelling reading; I feel the results would be less meaningful if I adopted my normal strategy of combining all the data together. When I write ROI, I'm referring to the return on your investment, there are 8 furlongs to 1 mile, I have rounded wins/runs and ROI percentages up or down so it's easier to read. Here's what I found:

HORSES STEPPING UP TO 1 MILE:
From 5 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 1/4 (25%)
ROI: 225%

From 6 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 12/79 (15%)
ROI: 9%

From 7 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 67/356 (19%)
ROI: 6%

HORSES STEPPING UP TO 1 MILE 1 FURLONG:
From 6 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 3/14 (21%)
ROI: 61%

From 7 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 13/63 (21%)
ROI: 25%

From 8 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 32/149 (22%)
ROI: 10%

HORSES STEPPING UP TO 1 MILE 2 FURLONGS:
From 6 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 1/7 (14%)
ROI: 143%

From 7 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 15/56 (27%)
ROI: 148%

From 8 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 25/186 (13%)
ROI: -32%

From 9 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 18/96 (21%)
ROI: -31%

HORSES STEPPING UP TO 1 MILE 4 FURLONGS:
From 7 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 1/6 (17%)
ROI: -72%

From 8 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 11/49 (22%)
ROI: 12%

From 9 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 7/35 (20%)
ROI: -27%

From 10 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 32/183 (18%)
ROI: 18%

From 11 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 14/79 (18%)
ROI: 18%

HORSES STEPPING UP TO 1 MILE 6 FURLONGS:
From 8 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 0/1 (0%)
ROI: -100%

From 10 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 0/6 (0%)
ROI: -100%

From 11 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 3/5 (60%)
ROI: 702%

From 12 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 16/80 (20%)
ROI: 53%

From 13 furlongs:
Wins/Runs: 3/11 (27%)
ROI: 14%

I believe we can draw real life conclusions from these results. I'd wager that punters have already figured out that betting on Mark Johnstons horses when stepping up in trip can be a profitable play and the majority of them are betting on him doing it when stepping a horse up to 1 mile 2 furlongs and 1 mile 4 furlongs. I don't think punters have latched onto the fact that he's capable of stepping them up more than a furlong or two without their win rate dropping too much. As a result, the bookies have sucked most of the value out of his horses stepping up in trip by one furlong and to a lesser extent by two furlongs, but there still looks to be a good opportunity of finding a nice priced winner when spotting a horse stepping up in trip by two, three and four furlongs. I doubt this article will have any significant effect on future ROI results as I expect most punters won't ever read this article (or similar ones for that matter) with only a handful of people willing to do serious research being the ones to benefit from this opportunity the most.

New Leyf only managed 4th whilst Thebes was backed into 11/2 and won.

Racing Post comments say "he returned to something like his best and, although edging both ways under pressure, stuck on in tenacious fashion to notch his second win over course and distance. Thursday Free Horse Racing Tips

"RACING at Ayr on Thursday has been abandoned after a 6.45am inspection due to parts of the track being frozen.

The decision was taken to call racing off early as temperatures were set to remain at their early morning levels which would have been insufficient for a thaw.

A disappointed clerk of the course Hazel Peplinski said: "It's currently 2C or 3C and that's the case through the day.

"90 per cent of the course is raceable but 10 per cent won't be safe and that's paramount. We even had 13mm of rain overnight and you would have thought that would help but it didn't."

So no tote jackpot available today, I will decide where to go for a placepot when I have marked up the cards.....

Three extra bets as usual and I am going to oppose Pegasus Again 7/2 2nd with an each way bet on the far better drawn Thunderball 6/1, the trainer, Glover has a good strike rate here too.

I am also going to oppose Granny McPhee 11/8,(unplaced) ok, she won yesterday but I am counting on the bounce factor preventing her from following and reckon course and distance winner Blue Eyed Eloise 8/1 (non-runner)has a great each way chance.

Banjaxed Girl 2/1 3.30 South is a straightforward win selection.

Folkestone abandons Tuesday meeting - Horse Racing News | Racing Post

Racing Post

TUESDAY'S meeting at Folkestone has been abandoned due to snow.

Officials at the course said on Monday the chances of racing taking places were "50-50" and rescheduled an inspection for 6am on Tuesday after an initial look at a 2pm a on Monday.
However, there is still snow so racing has been abandoned.

TUESDAY'S meeting at Newcastle goes ahead as planned after officials at the course were satisfied with conditions on the morning of racing.

Clerk of the course James Armstrong had called an 8am inspection for Tuesday, but was able to make an earlier decision.

"We've been lucky," he said on Tuesday morning.

"We had a fair drop of rain last night and we came in this morning and there'd only been a hard air frost, which didn't really penetrate the ground.

"The light came up in decent time and we were completely capable of racing at 7.30am."

The going for Tuesday's fixture, which starts at 2.10pm, is heavy, soft in places.

Patrick Veitch on being a progambler

Independent:

" "The biggest challenge you face as a punter is how you deal with difficult times," he explained. "The ability to bounce back, and really focus on the day after a bad one, is something I probably wasn't that good at before. I don't think many punters are. In a way, if I didn't focus on the next day, I'd almost be betraying what I've [been through]. There's almost a switch inside me. If I want to turn on that intensity and motivation, at a difficult point, I know how to do it."

In fairness, the bookmakers have given him few truly perilous moments. Despite the "touches" pulled off with his own horses, he insists nearly two-thirds of his profit has come from races uncoloured by information. However glamorous his lifestyle, the inspiration is worthless without the perspiration. By the end of the Flat season, he is shattered, but by ignoring jump racing, his appetite is renewed every spring.

'Provided it's kept in reasonable bounds, it's almost essential to have a great self-confidence,' he said. 'Because you're not going to make money going with the consensus. I suppose it is a pleasure. But as a pure punter I don't try to deliver the buzz as a big priority. The more you succumb to the adrenalin, the more difficult you make it for yourself when things go wrong, and you have to make balanced decisions. The actual process of picking a horse, you want to be as dry as possible, to use cool logic, but the business of the battle – how I trade a position, how I use anything from a very small number of people to a whole army, how that's executed, yes, that's the big buzz.'

In his book, Veitch describes the split personality of a successful gambler: part brain surgeon, part mad axeman. In essence, the former must select the horse, and the latter back him. 'Betting's an immensely layered logic problem,' he said. 'You've got potentially 50, 60, 70, 80 different factors, each very subjective. The skill is in recognising which factors truly are important on any given day, and whether the combination is enough to make a horse seriously underestimated in the betting. The cliché is of the killer instinct – being able, without drawing a massive chart, to sift it through your mind and sense that enough boxes have been ticked.'

It is a clinical process, and few meeting Veitch immediately believe they are in the presence of a human sunbeam. But he can be pardoned a certain wariness. There was a time when his life might depend on the number of people who could answer the question: who is Patrick Veitch? In time, he thinks he will settle down, have a family. For now, however, he is happy to be admired, not adrift; to be the predator, not the prey.

'Enemy Number One', by Patrick Veitch, is published by Racing Post, £18.99"

Middleham Stables Open Day

A great local event under threat...

http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/local/northallerton/4862012.New_threat_to_stables_open_day/

FEARS are once again being expressed for the future of one of the major events in the region’s racing calendar.

The Middleham Stables Open Day, always staged on Good Friday, has been highly successful over the last two decades.

Last year alone, the event - which is sponsored by The Northern Echo - attracted more than 7,000 people and raised more than £16,000 for local charities - despite rain and overcast skies.

But fears, first voiced and then dismissed 12 months ago, that racing could introduced on Good Friday have now resurfaced, putting the open day’s future in jeopardy.

The religious holiday is one of only two days a year when there is no racing, leaving stables free to take part in the open day and enthusiasts the chance to go along.

And if the British Horesracing Authority introduces meetings on Good Friday in 2011 this year’s Middleham event could well be the last.

Wednesday JACKPOT Not won. £5,563.71 carried over to Wolverhampton today

THURSDAY'S meetings at Wolverhampton and Lingfield go ahead as planned after the courses passed inspections on the morning of racing.

Both tracks were subject to a 6.30am inspections on Thursday, but officials are pleased racing can take place.

Yipee! A hat trick of meetings today with Southall also on.

Bumper Wednesday

No bets today for a few reasons:

Kempton is on after a 3rd inspection but I never bet after a a 3rd inspection as history says that to do so is a great way to lose money.

No bets at Southwell either, the meeting is all bumpers ( AKA national hunt flat races) very much a one so no reliable stats or form to go on so a no go zone for me.

If you are betting today please let us know your reasoning.

Third inspection at Kempton

"TODAY'S all-weather meetings at Kempton is subject to a third inspection at 11am.
With heavy snow forecast for Wednesday morning, a first inspection at 7.30am was forced back to 9.30am.

Snow was still falling during the second inspection and with officials wanting to give the meeting every chance, a further inspection was called for 11am."

Lingfield off

TODAY'S all-weather meeting at Lingfield has been abandoned after snow made the course unaccessible.

"TODAY'S all-weather meetings at Kempton is subject to a second inspection at 9.30am.
The threat of overnight snow had forced officials at Kempton to schedule a first look for 7.30am, but with forecast heavier snow for Wednesday morning, a decision was made to push the inspection back to 9.30am."

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

More inspections

"TODAY'S all-weather meetings at Lingfield and Kempton are both subject to a second inspection.

The threat of overnight snow had forced officials at Lingfield to take a first look at 6.30am and with over an inch lying on the track, a second inspection was scheduled for 8.30am.
Speaking just before 7am on Wednesday, clerk of the course Neil Mackenzie Ross said: "I'm reasonably confident about the prospects of racing."

It was a similar story at Kempton where officials will take a second look at 9.30am.

UK Horse racing from Cheltenham

Maybe not...

Officials at Cheltenham have opted to take a further look at 11.30am following a precautionary inspection ahead of this afternoon's high-class meeting.

Clerk of the course Simon Claisse was optimistic prior to the earlier 10am check and although conditions are reportedly unraceable at present, the Prestbury Park team remain hopeful the fixture will beat the frost.

Cheltenham's Andy Clifton said: "We are going to have a further inspection at 11.30am. We are not currently raceable and the frost covers are coming off, but it's moving in the right direction and giving us plenty of optimism."
