Horse Sense guardian.co.uk:
My favourite newspaper racing column
"Today's best bets, by Ron Cox
Two horses who have been in good form over hurdles catch the eye on their return to the Flat today. At Haydock, Moonwalking (8.10) can step up on his fifth in an apprentices' handicap at Doncaster in March. Since then he has won twice over hurdles, and the step up to 1m6f should be in his favour.
Toshi (5.05) ran poorly in that same Doncaster race, but has done well over jumps since then, moving up to a rating of 125. From a mark of 57, Jim Goldie's gelding should be competitive in the nine-furlong handicap at Hamilton.
At Goodwood, Flapper (3.35) could be well treated on her handicap debut. She shaped nicely when fourth in a race over the course and distance that is working out well and Ryan Moore is booked"

Bethell's Max powers to success (From The Northern Echo)
One for the notebook. . .
Bethells Max powers to success (From The Northern Echo):
"JAMES BETHELL is set to scour the programme book for another imminent opportunity for Templetuohy Max after he recorded a decisive success in the Weatherbys Bloodstock Insurance Handicap at Redcar.
The visored runner was soon at the head of affairs under Graham Gibbons and while many of his rivals were hard at work after turning for home, his jockey sat motionless until approaching the two-furlong marker.
Once given a reminder, the 7-1 shot stretched even further clear – and was even able to ease down in the closing stages to come home four lengths clear of Spirit Of France.
Bethell said: ‘‘Last time at Nottingham we gave the instructions to Darryll (Holland) not to be frightened, so he went and made the running and just got caught.
‘‘So we said to Graham to do the same, and it is always quite difficult to make that ground up on this fast ground. He just went on and on.
‘‘I’ll have to go home and see what there is for him, but I think he ought to come out under a penalty as you just wouldn’t know what the handicapper will do.’’ Gibbons had earlier produced another fine frontrunning ride on El Dececy, who made the most of a drop in class to land the Racing UK Sky 432 Selling Stakes"

Diamond to sparkle at Redcar
Nightmare day yesterday with a rare blank for all tips topped off with broadband connection problems.....today has to be better
Diamond can really sparkle at Redcar (From The Northern Echo):
"REAL DIAMOND can make the best possible start to the year as she turns out in the Anderson Barrowcliff Handicap at Redcar.
Allan Dickman’s charge is making a relatively late seasonal bow, but she was on the go until the end of October so a lengthy break should have freshened her up nicely.
Real Diamond did not look a likely winner in her first three starts as a juvenile but she some improvement for experience at the back end of 2008 and eventually opened her account at the sixth time of asking.
Dickman largely campaigned in maidens last term with a sole start in nursery company and she returns to the handicap field here.
Racing off a mark of 66, she does not look too harshly treated and can do herself justice.
Mark Johnston’s Maqaam hails from a family of winners and he can continue the trend in the Buy Your Tickets On- Line redcarracing.co.uk Maiden Stakes.
A half-brother to the likes of Group Three-placed Nufoos among others, Maqaam has obviously taken some time to mature as he failed to start as a juvenile but connections’ patience can pay off."

Candy issues Amour Temple warning - Horse Racing - AOL Sport
Candy issues Amour Temple warning - Horse Racing - AOL Sport:
"Exciting young sprinter Amour Propre is among 12 final declarations for the betfred.com Temple Stakes at Haydock on Saturday.
However, trainer Henry Candy warns he will not run the three-year-old in the Group Two contest if the ground is soft.
He said: 'It's not ideal, but I think we shall to have a look and see what happens over the next couple of days. It will have to be a last-minute decision. He's very well - he's not done much since Newmarket - and he keeps himself fit.'"

Copper returns with high hopes (From The Northern Echo)
Copper returns with high hopes (From The Northern Echo):
"GODOLPHIN will be hoping Copperbeech can buck the statistics and go on to Investec Oaks glory after she has bagged the Height Of Fashion Stakes at Goodwood.
Formerly known as the Lupe Stakes, this ten-furlong heat was claimed by Love Divine nine years ago before she went on to Epsom glory but recent winners have largely failed to hit those kind of heights. However, Copperbeech brings Group One form to the table this time and she will surely take some beating if on song.
The Red Ransom filly won two of three starts for Andre Fabre last term, landing moderate events at Deauville and Longchamp before being stepped up in grade at the Arc meeting.
Her third behind Proportional in the Marcel Boussac was highly creditable, especially given that the runnerup Elusive Wave has subsequently bagged the French 1000 Guineas.
She was only beaten threequarters of a length by that runner despite already appearing in need of a longer trip, something that is sure to suit here."
