Patrick Veitch on being a progambler

Independent:

" "The biggest challenge you face as a punter is how you deal with difficult times," he explained. "The ability to bounce back, and really focus on the day after a bad one, is something I probably wasn't that good at before. I don't think many punters are. In a way, if I didn't focus on the next day, I'd almost be betraying what I've [been through]. There's almost a switch inside me. If I want to turn on that intensity and motivation, at a difficult point, I know how to do it."

In fairness, the bookmakers have given him few truly perilous moments. Despite the "touches" pulled off with his own horses, he insists nearly two-thirds of his profit has come from races uncoloured by information. However glamorous his lifestyle, the inspiration is worthless without the perspiration. By the end of the Flat season, he is shattered, but by ignoring jump racing, his appetite is renewed every spring.

'Provided it's kept in reasonable bounds, it's almost essential to have a great self-confidence,' he said. 'Because you're not going to make money going with the consensus. I suppose it is a pleasure. But as a pure punter I don't try to deliver the buzz as a big priority. The more you succumb to the adrenalin, the more difficult you make it for yourself when things go wrong, and you have to make balanced decisions. The actual process of picking a horse, you want to be as dry as possible, to use cool logic, but the business of the battle – how I trade a position, how I use anything from a very small number of people to a whole army, how that's executed, yes, that's the big buzz.'

In his book, Veitch describes the split personality of a successful gambler: part brain surgeon, part mad axeman. In essence, the former must select the horse, and the latter back him. 'Betting's an immensely layered logic problem,' he said. 'You've got potentially 50, 60, 70, 80 different factors, each very subjective. The skill is in recognising which factors truly are important on any given day, and whether the combination is enough to make a horse seriously underestimated in the betting. The clich̩ is of the killer instinct Рbeing able, without drawing a massive chart, to sift it through your mind and sense that enough boxes have been ticked.'

It is a clinical process, and few meeting Veitch immediately believe they are in the presence of a human sunbeam. But he can be pardoned a certain wariness. There was a time when his life might depend on the number of people who could answer the question: who is Patrick Veitch? In time, he thinks he will settle down, have a family. For now, however, he is happy to be admired, not adrift; to be the predator, not the prey.

'Enemy Number One', by Patrick Veitch, is published by Racing Post, £18.99"

bogus tipsters

"PUNTERS are being to urged to ignore the latest attempt by bogus tipsters to scam them using a service operating under the name Racing Post Extra Limited.

Potential victims have contacted the Racing Post newspaper after receiving unsolicited texts offering a 14-day free trial to the service.

The practice was highlighted last August when potential victims were being pressed to pay £1,500 for an annual subscription after being sent unsolicited free tips by text.

Middleham Stables Open Day

A great local event under threat...

http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/local/northallerton/4862012.New_threat_to_stables_open_day/

FEARS are once again being expressed for the future of one of the major events in the region’s racing calendar.

The Middleham Stables Open Day, always staged on Good Friday, has been highly successful over the last two decades.

Last year alone, the event - which is sponsored by The Northern Echo - attracted more than 7,000 people and raised more than £16,000 for local charities - despite rain and overcast skies.

But fears, first voiced and then dismissed 12 months ago, that racing could introduced on Good Friday have now resurfaced, putting the open day’s future in jeopardy.

The religious holiday is one of only two days a year when there is no racing, leaving stables free to take part in the open day and enthusiasts the chance to go along.

And if the British Horesracing Authority introduces meetings on Good Friday in 2011 this year’s Middleham event could well be the last.

Wednesday JACKPOT Not won. £5,563.71 carried over to Wolverhampton today

THURSDAY'S meetings at Wolverhampton and Lingfield go ahead as planned after the courses passed inspections on the morning of racing.

Both tracks were subject to a 6.30am inspections on Thursday, but officials are pleased racing can take place.

Yipee! A hat trick of meetings today with Southall also on.

Bumper Wednesday

No bets today for a few reasons:

Kempton is on after a 3rd inspection but I never bet after a a 3rd inspection as history says that to do so is a great way to lose money.

No bets at Southwell either, the meeting is all bumpers ( AKA national hunt flat races) very much a one so no reliable stats or form to go on so a no go zone for me.

If you are betting today please let us know your reasoning.

Third inspection at Kempton

"TODAY'S all-weather meetings at Kempton is subject to a third inspection at 11am.
With heavy snow forecast for Wednesday morning, a first inspection at 7.30am was forced back to 9.30am.

Snow was still falling during the second inspection and with officials wanting to give the meeting every chance, a further inspection was called for 11am."

Lingfield off

TODAY'S all-weather meeting at Lingfield has been abandoned after snow made the course unaccessible.

"TODAY'S all-weather meetings at Kempton is subject to a second inspection at 9.30am.
The threat of overnight snow had forced officials at Kempton to schedule a first look for 7.30am, but with forecast heavier snow for Wednesday morning, a decision was made to push the inspection back to 9.30am."

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

More inspections

"TODAY'S all-weather meetings at Lingfield and Kempton are both subject to a second inspection.

The threat of overnight snow had forced officials at Lingfield to take a first look at 6.30am and with over an inch lying on the track, a second inspection was scheduled for 8.30am.
Speaking just before 7am on Wednesday, clerk of the course Neil Mackenzie Ross said: "I'm reasonably confident about the prospects of racing."

It was a similar story at Kempton where officials will take a second look at 9.30am.

Barney Clifford, clerk of the course at Kempton, said: "We had 2cm of snow overnight and the forecast is for the snow to continue all morning, which is why I have pushed the inspection back to 9.30am.

Wednesday race meetings

"WEDNESDAY'S all-weather meeting at Lingfield is subject to a second inspection at 7.30am."

SOUTHWELL looks ok....

KEMPTON
GOING: STANDARD (INSPECTION 7.30am)

UK Horse racing from Cheltenham

Maybe not...

Officials at Cheltenham have opted to take a further look at 11.30am following a precautionary inspection ahead of this afternoon's high-class meeting.

Clerk of the course Simon Claisse was optimistic prior to the earlier 10am check and although conditions are reportedly unraceable at present, the Prestbury Park team remain hopeful the fixture will beat the frost.

Cheltenham's Andy Clifton said: "We are going to have a further inspection at 11.30am. We are not currently raceable and the frost covers are coming off, but it's moving in the right direction and giving us plenty of optimism."
