Rip Van's the man at Glorious Goodwood (From The Northern Echo)

Rip won very tidily I think...

Rip Van's the man at Glorious Goodwood (From The Northern Echo): "RIP Van Winkle tore the BGC Sussex Stakes field at Glorious Goodwood to pieces and earned an elusive Group One success after a series of nearmisses against dual Classic winner Sea The Stars.
A catalogue of problems have beset Aidan O’Brien’s colt throughout the summer, and he provided all concerned with an 11th-hour injury scare on Tuesday evening when a crack appeared on his nearhind hoof.

Fourth to Sea The Stars in both the 2000 Guineas and Derby before finishing second to him in the Eclipse, his participation went right down to the wire, with O’Brien even accompanying the son of Galileo down to the start to monitor his condition.

But with no apparent signs of lameness, the 6-4 favourite broke tidily from the stalls under Johnny Murtagh and stole the show on day two of the meeting.

Murtagh sent Rip Van Winkle on his way turning for home at halfway in mile showpiece, and the market leader bounded clear to get off the mark for 2009 by two and a half lengths.
A foot infection in the spring has hindered the winner ever since, with O’Brien claiming it ‘‘very unusual’’ for his charge to have raced on this year after that setback.

O’Brien, winning the race for the fourth time and following up from Henrythenavigator 12 months ago, said: ‘‘We are over the moon with what has happened and we’re so pleased that he has shown everybody what he shows us everyday, and having had to overcome everything yesterday evening."

Middleham trainer Burke says race ban is "unfair and excessive" (From The Northern Echo)

Middleham trainer Burke says race ban is "unfair and excessive" (From The Northern Echo):

"A RACEHORSE trainer has branded a 12-month ban for providing insider information as 'unfair and excessive'.

Middleham-based Karl Burke says he will appeal the punishment handed out by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The ban was imposed after the trainer admitted supplying inside information on races to former owner Miles Rodgers. He also admitted associating with Rodgers, who at the time was disqualified from involvement in racing. However, a statement issued by his solicitors said that the breaches occurred in 'unusual circumstances'. It explained that Rodgers was an owner of horses and co-investor in land at Mr Burke's yard at Spigot Lodge, near Middleham, at the time.

The statement said: 'This business relationship was on-going at the time Mr Rodgers was warned off and continued for a short period thereafter.

'During this period of contact Mr Burke also had some associations with Mr Rodgers connected with horse racing including the imparting of opinion on the running of six horses and the sale of the horse Khanjar.' According to his solicitors, Burke received no payment from Rodgers for providing his opinion on the races. he statement said that he spoke to Rodgers about the races in order to prevent any difficulty in the replacement of Rodgers as an investor at Spigot Lodge.

'Mr Burke was misguided in associating with Mr Rodgers in this way and has admitted these failings,' the solicitors said. 'He does not dispute being liable for a penalty for these breaches but the penalty imposed by the BHA is unfair and excessive.'

Ffos Las

Pavershooz can land at Ayr (From The Northern Echo):

"Top trainers Barry Hills, John Gosden, Mick Channon and Jeremy Noseda are among those sending horses to the first Flat meeting at Ffos Las on tomorrow.
A total of 63 horses were declared at the 48-hour final stage for the first Flat meeting at the Carmarthenshire track which opened for jump racing last month.
Hills, the leading trainer at Royal Ascot last month, is set to have four runners on the card beginning with Our Dream Queen in the opening EBF/Jamie Yeates Memorial Maiden Stakes.
The Lambourn maestro is represented in the feature 1st Signs & Graphic Fillies’ Handicap by Onemix. A six-strong field for the mile-and-a quarter contest also includes the Brian Meehan-trained Classic Legend and Charity Belle from the Gosden stable.
Llancarfan trainer Evan Williams, who won the first race staged at Ffos Las with Plunkett, has two runners – Dantari in the Natural UK Handicap and Enlightenment in the concluding EPS Handicap.
The going is officially described as good."

Scoop6 set to make millionaire on Saturday - Horse Racing News | Racing Post:

Totesport expect increased interest in the lifechanging rollover to boost the current £718,960 to well over a £1m.

Juicy lay and back tip for email subscribers yesterday, I wrote:

Tudor Key makes all-weather bow at Lingfield (From The Northern Echo)

Tudor Key makes all-weather bow at Lingfield (From The Northern Echo):

"Sir Mark Prescott traditionally starts rolling into form as the summer progresses and his Casual Garcia catches the eye in the Weatherby's Bloodstock Insurance Handicap. On brief inspection of his first run of the season, the portents are not great as he finished tailed off behind the useful Judgethemoment in a handicap at Ascot in May.

But his debuts as a two- and three-year-old were similarly abject, and last term he ended up rattling off three wins. The two-mile distance appears to be no stumbling block and, as many hardened punters will know, horses must be forgiven the occasional bad run. The market closer to the time will provide the greatest insight into Casual Garcia’s claims, but the fact the baronet is persevering with him suggests there is more to come."

Bargain buy Sirvino proves worth at York (From The Northern Echo)

Bargain buy Sirvino proves worth at York (From The Northern Echo):

"SIRVINO completed his rags-to-riches story by taking his unbeaten record this season to five in the 50th John Smith’s Cup at York.

Thirsk trainer David Barron paid just £3,000 for the horse as a yearling at Newmarket and the gelding has now won £120,000 in prizemoney for property developers Theo Williams and Charles Mocatta.

Giving 3lb claimer Neil Brown his biggest success, the 16-1 shot foiled the gallant attempt by Ryan Moore on The Queen’s runner Kingdom Of Fife to make all the running in this valuable heritage handicap.

Joining the leader two furlongs out, Sirvino forged clear to win by two and three-quarter lengths. Albaqaa finished strongly for third, two and a half lengths away, with Seeking The Buck fourth.

‘‘I thought he was a nice horse but I never thought we would be here today at the start of the season,’’ said Barron. ‘‘He is a nice horse and has a good attitude. I’m getting older now and I like these types ‘‘You are dreaming all the time but when you get slot 16 you think, ‘oh dear here we go’, but Neil’s a good lad. ‘‘I left it entirely to him and not to push forward too soon and to get to rail as soon as you can after the bend. ‘‘I’ve never won this race before and have only had a couple of runners.’’ Hawick-born Brown, 23, said: ‘‘With every run he’s got better and better – he’s so straightforward. ‘‘I was a further back than I would have liked but I managed to get a run up the rails.

‘‘I thought he (runner-up Kingdom Of Fife) might get going again, but my lad kept battling.’’ Moore also had to settle for second place with similar tactics on Warringah in the John Smith’s Extra Smooth Silver Cup Stakes.

It was a close call, with Hits Only Vic (16-1) getting up by a short head and Magicalmysterytour another nose away in third.

Declan Carroll, celebrating his first Listed triumph, will consider bringing the fiveyear- old back to York for the Ebor.

National Trainers' Foundation chief Rupert Arnold calls for drugs debate | Sport | The Guardian

National Trainers' Foundation chief Rupert Arnold calls for drugs debate | Sport | The Guardian: "Rupert Arnold, the chief executive of the National Trainers' Federation, said yesterday that he has 'no personal knowledge at all' of how widely tranexamic acid (TA), the anti-bleeding agent at the centre of the Nicky Henderson doping case, is used in British stables.

Arnold also renewed a recent call by the NTF for 'a wider debate about the nature of prohibited drugs ... because there are treatments that are designed to make horses' lives more comfortable and assist with the rigours of training that do not in themselves enhance performance.'

Henderson was banned from running horses for three months, and fined £40,000, by the British Horseracing Authority's disciplinary panel after he was found to have given TA to a mare owned by the Queen before a race in February.

The NTF issued a statement shortly afterwards which expressed 'sympathy' for Henderson, described his punishment as 'severe', and added that 'this [medication] is becoming a difficult area for trainers to manage'. This prompted speculation that the Federation might be aware of other trainers using the same, or similar, substances on a regular basis."

After the first, Highland Laddie collapsed due to heat exhaustion and required '600 to 800 gallons of water [2,700 to 3,600 litres]' to revive him, diminishing the supplies on course.

After a lengthy delay and an inquiry during which they consulted jockeys and trainers, the stewards elected to call off the meeting on 'wholly equine grounds'. Explaining the reason for the abandonment, stipendary steward Richard Westdrop said: 'Due to the excessive heat and the fact it was 85 degrees (29.4C) in the racecourse stables, the horses were arriving on the track already dehydrated before they had run in the race.

'The decision to abandon was a wholly equine welfare condition. We took expert advice from our vet Jilly Hancock and Mr Andrew Harrison, a senior veterinary official on the course.'
Before the decision was taken to abandon, clerk of the course Fergus Cameron had tried to access a fire hydrant in the centre of the course to reach more urgently needed water, and raceourse staff with hosepipes were seen filling up water containers.

It was an ironic twist for the course, which has suffered from flooding over the last two summers and was unable to race."

Northumbrland Plate (From The Northern Echo):

"THE Northumberland Plate took place in front of a packed crowd at Newcastle on Saturday, and produced a 16-1 winner in Som Tala.

The nine-year-old trained by Mick Channon made all the running to win Europe’s richest stayers’ handicap under jockey Tony Culhane, who was winning the race for the first time.
Later in the day Culhane and Channon teamed up again by landing the maiden stakes with The Human League at odds of 9-4."

Som Tala must have booted loads of punters out of the scoop6!
